IPC to BNS Conversion Table: The Sections You Actually Use
13 Oct 2026 · 4 min read · Reshma Khanam

The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) replaced the Indian Penal Code, 1860 (IPC) from 1 July 2024 (PIB, Ministry of Home Affairs). The BNS is not just the IPC with new numbers. Some sections were merged into sub-sections, some were deleted and some offences are new. Each row below was checked against the government correspondence table and the section text in the Gazette of India copy of the Act.
Educational material, not legal advice. Check the current text on India Code before relying on a section in court.
How to read this IPC vs BNS chart
- The arrow (→) points to the corresponding BNS provision. Corresponding does not always mean identical wording or punishment, so open the BNS section before you cite it.
- Sub-sections matter. Many IPC punishment sections are now sub-sections of the defining section (for example IPC 379 → BNS 303(2)). Cite down to the sub-section.

- IPC 34 → BNS 3(5): Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention

- IPC 299 → BNS 100: Culpable homicide

- IPC 304B → BNS 80: Dowry death

Offences against women and the body

Deleted IPC sections and new BNS offences
- IPC 124A (sedition): deleted. The government table marks BNS 152 ("Act endangering sovereignty, unity and integrity of India") as a new section. It is not a renumbered 124A.
- IPC 377 (unnatural offences): deleted, with no corresponding section in the table.
- IPC 497 (adultery): deleted.
- New in BNS: 111 (organised crime), 112 (petty organised crime), 113 (terrorist act) and 304 (snatching).
IPC or BNS: which applies?
BNS section 358(1) repeals the IPC. Under section 358(2), the repeal does not affect any penalty or punishment incurred for offences committed against the IPC, or any investigation, proceeding or remedy for them. So the date of the offence is the starting point: an offence committed before 1 July 2024 is generally dealt with under the IPC. Read section 358 in full for your facts.
